I have flat, excessively straight hair that stubbornly refuses to hold a curl unless I threaten it with a lot (A LOT) of heat. Naturally that means I have an ongoing obsession with any hair product that gives me the hard sell about texture and volume (more on that on a later post!). I also have extreme jealously whenever I see ‘just rolled out of bed and look so beachy and shexy’ girls.
Bumble and bumble’s surf range promises to give you all that wavy, wonderful, ‘absolutely haven’t tried’ hair. I’ve been trying this set on and off over the past six months and even though the salt spray is a cult product that people rave about, I wasn’t immediately impressed. But I persevered.
The main thing that I did immediately love about the range was that all that salt in the shampoo stops my hair getting oily as quickly. It also cleanses your hair to clear away any product build up that might be dragging your hair down. That had a fantastic impact on my flat hair. The creme rinse conditioner is equally light, but after a couple of minutes, still leaves your hair nice and soft. I usually reverse shampoo my hair when I wash with the surf products to help it along the way.
The bit where it all went a bit wrong for me was in the lengths. After combing my wet hair, applying the surf spray and letting my hair dry naturally I had assumed my hair would bounce up into beachy waves. I was wrong. Instead, my hair just went fluffy and whilst my hair is lots of things, fluffy is not normally one of them. It was not what I was hoping for and just looked messy on me. Not messy in a good way.
So for me, this range takes a little more work. After persevering with my reverse shampooing, the best way for this product to work for me is to spray the surf spray through my damp hair, allow it to partially air dry, then twist my hair into two (or more) small buns to complete drying. I’ll do this overnight if I have time, or I’ll use a hair dryer if I need to speed up the process. This still doesn’t make my hair look like a true beach babe, but my straight hair and I have come to realise that low maintenance wavy locks might be an impossible dream. This gets us close and definitely gives hair texture and a little bit of hold.
I don’t use this every day because controlling the fluffy look is a bit more hard work than I like on a daily basis. I have the travel set which is even better for helping along beach waves on holiday or for relaxed looking weekend hair (when you probably have just rolled out of bed).
