I have to admit that when I first started testing out (and really enjoying) Chuckling Goat products, I had absolutely no idea about how interesting the brand’s story would be. I generally love learning about natural beauty brands because the people who create smaller batches of hand made products usually have an interesting tale to tell about how they got there. Chuckling Goat has an actual bestselling book to tell it’s story. So, there’s probably not much more for me to say, when I could hand over to Shann Jones of Chuckling Goat to tell you all about it…
Tell us a little about you and how Chuckling Goat came to be created.
I am a San Francisco radio talk show host who came to Wales, met a Welsh goat farmer named Rich and happily became the Farmer’s Wife! When Rich came out of hospital with a life-threatening superbug infection, I was able to save him using a combination of essential oils and the goatsmilk kefir that we make on the farm. I learned to put our kefir into handmade soaps and lotion, which turned out to to clear my little boy’s eczema. When the other mums on the school run began asking for my handmade eczema treatment for their own children, we launched our online business Chuckling Goat. It soon became a runaway success. My diaries were turned into a #1 Amazon Best Seller called Secrets of Chuckling Goat: How a Herd of Goats Saved My Family and Created a Business that Became a Natural Heath Phenomenon. Today we have ten employees — but we still make everything by hand on the farm.
What is kefir and why should people choose it?
Kefir is a fermented milk product that is the most powerful probiotic you can find. Ours is ready to drink, pure and unflavored, unlike sugary flavored versions that damage your microbiome. We use the kefir in our “Good Skin Solution,” which means that you drink the kefir over a period of 9 weeks to restore the microbiome inside the gut, while also applying the kefir cleansers and lotion to heal the skin’s biome. This program achieves great results for eczema, psoriasis, rosacea and acne.
What is it about goats milk kefir that makes it special?
Goats milk is the least allergic and most beneficial milk to human beings, so it makes the best and healthiest base for kefir. All the kefir is consumed during the fermentation process, so our goats milk kefir is lactose-free.
What’s your favourite product in the range and why?
My favourite product in the range is our Break-Out Kefir Lotion. It contains thyme and tea tree essential oil, and won us the Bronze Medal in the National FreeFrom Skincare Awards. Everyone on the farm has a big bottle of BreakOut Kefir Lotion by their bedside! It’s great for vanishing spots, dealing with cracked heels and hands, healing eczema, coping with itchy rashes and bumps. I even used it to shrink a cyst in my eyebrow – worked a treat!
What’s your daily beauty routine?
We’re very busy on the farm, so everything has to be quick and easy for me – no fussing! In the morning I take a shower with a bar of our Wake-Up Kefir cleanser, the lemongrass essential oil in the bar wakes me up with a citrus blast and gets me going. I moisturize face and body in the morning with our Soothing Kefir Lotion – it contains rosemary, great for – ahem – mature skin like mine. No make-up – just a bit of sunscreen and some chapstick. Luckily my goats and hubby seem to love me just as I am! ; ) At night I soak in a warm tub with one of our Refresh bath melts – the coconut oil leaves my skin silky smooth, and the spearmint essential oil has a gorgeous clean scent. I wash my face while in the tub with a bar of Sensitive Kefir Cleanser – the oatmeal and honey is healing to repair any damage my face has had from environmental toxins during the day – and moisturise face and body afterwards with our recently launched Calm-Down lotion – I adore the smells of lavender essential oil, and it gets me ready for sleep.
What do you eat or drink to feel your best?
I drink kefir every morning! Along with an iron supplement and handful of walnuts. Then I have a bowl of porridge with blueberries and 70% chocolate around 11. Around 3 pm I eat a protein meal – eggs, or a big protein salad with fish and beans. While the boys eat supper in the evening I sit with them and have a green smoothie, with kale, orange, avocado, apple and chia seeds. I find I do best if I eat light after 6 pm! I drink a lot of water and lemon. I sweeten with stevia instead of sugar, and try to avoid white bread, white rice, white potatoes. I behave myself at home during the week, so I can afford to have treats when we go out.
What are your top tips for relaxing?
Milk a few goats and muck out a few stalls – I’m always so tired afterwards that I fall straight into bed! We love spending time with family – we have regular big family dinners around the 8-foot farmhouse kitchen table. Rich and I have a date night once a week, when we go out for a beer and a pub meal – we’re big believers in 80-20!
What’s next for Chuckling Goat?
We’re rolling out our probiotic program for animals – it’s as good for dogs and horses as it is for people! We’re also introducing a practitioner program, where approved practitioners will be able to purchase our products at a wholesale rate to pass onto their clients.
See, told you that’s a pretty good backstory…Thank you Shann! You can read all about my thoughts on the Soothing Toolkit here.
